about

Mady Gundo comes from the tradition of praise songs of the griots. Griots (bards in English) are a caste of history-keepers, musicians and cultural knowledge-keepers. Sometimes these griots will direct songs to a particular Patron, in this case Mady Gundo. Often these musicians are paid by the Patron of the song. Usually, they are song to patrons with the means to reward the Griots for their musical proficiency. This is an old piece praising Mady Gundo for his integrity, business acumen and good looks.

lyrics

Mady Gundo, you've come to grace us
Mady Gundo, there is no God but God and Mohammed is his prophet

I will go to the market in Bamako
I will buy cloth
I will make it clear white color, the color of fresh milk
I will give it to my Patron, Mady Gundo

Mady Gundo, you've come to grace us

He wears his clothes well

His walk is composed
He is generous to the griots

Mady Gundo, you've come to grace us
